4 Signs of Hidden Water Damage

While most of the time, water damage in your home or business is pretty darn obvious, water has a tricky way of also finding its way into nooks, crannies, any other type of hidden space and starting to do damage long before you know what?s happening. It?s our guess you have a friend or family member who has gone to do a kitchen or bathroom remodel, only to discover the plumbing was leaking somewhere undetected, and did some damage. In some cases, the damage is severe ? in other cases, it might just be some insulation that needs to be replaced, and mold that needs to be removed.

If you suspect there is standing water or water damage somewhere you can?t see, look for some of these others signs that something may be amiss:

Drooping walls or ceilings

Saturated drywall or ceiling materials become very heavy from the added weight of water is soaked into the surfaces. Eventually, the drywall or ceiling will begin to buckle, droop, or become deformed by the weight. In drastic water damage situations, walls or ceilings this wet actually post a safety hazard because they could fall or collapse.

Unpleasant odors.

I?m sure all of us have walked into a home (okay MANY homes) that smelled musty or damp. Those smells are signs of a water issue somewhere in the home. The longer the water sits, the more likely it is that mold is growing in that area ? and that bacterial growth can create that unpleasant, earthy smell. The longer you wait, the bigger the damage will be, and the more likely it is that water damage will spread and affect other areas of the structure. It is very important you call in a professional mold removal company to get rid of any mold quickly. You cannot kill mold, and bleach isn?t going to get the job done like was believed once upon a time. Mold spores are not something to mess around with.

Visible mold

This is an absolute indicator of a water problem; mold does not grow without some help from a moisture source. Mold can grow year-round here in Irmo. It?s also important to realize that if you see mold growth in one area of your home, those mold spores are likely already airborne and can make their way into other nooks and crannies. Even a small, discolored spot on a beam could be more than dirt ? it could be mold. If you suspect mold growth, it?s simple to call in a professional to test it.

Stains

This goes back to the first point about drooping walls or ceilings. Before that happens, you might start to see areas of discoloration. This can be one of the first indicators that there is a leak somewhere, and water is getting into areas where you don?t want it.

The longer you let a leak continue, or water to sit, the greater the damage will be, and the more work it will take to fix. However, just because you suspect something is wrong doesn?t mean it will be a catastrophe. A quick call to Sincerely Yours and we will come inspect the possible problem areas, and work toward a solution!

How we detect water damage

The extent of water damage is not as easy to detect as many would think. While a wall or floor may look dry doesn’t necessarily mean it...
