Investigating Water Damage

When talking about investigations, most people think of CSI or forensic files. However, there is another type of investigation that is equally important and can be just as tricky to solve. Lurking in basements, attics, crawl spaces, under cabinets, and around the very foundation of your Irmo home is a silent, but devastatingly common culprit of devastation among home and business owners across the country: Water.

We at Sincerely Yours know that finding water damage in the home is the beginning of a pretty stressful and sometimes costly case that, if not handled quickly and correctly, can cause immense damage. When racing against the clock to find the source of the water so as to mitigate damage, it is important to have the right equipment. Sometimes with water damage, the cause is obvious. For example, when water is leaking from broken pipes or faulty appliances, there is no question what is responsible for the damage. But many times when water is found in homes, the source is not so easy to find.

Take Action

Just as a victim of a crime would call local authorities and the detective office to catch their assailant, victims of water damage need to call the right people. Qualified restoration crews specialize in solving cases of water damage in homes and office buildings, and have the right equipment to get the case closed as quickly as possible. One of the most beneficial things restoration crews can use in finding hidden sources of water leaks or floods is thermal imaging. There are so many different areas where moisture can accumulate in homes that are not easily seen, or go unnoticed. Infrared cameras used in thermal imaging can detect moisture wherever it may be hiding. Infrared light is not visible to the human eye, and objects emit infrared light due to their thermal condition (the presence of heat or lack thereof). Thermal imaging cameras detect infrared energy, or heat, given off by an object’s thermal condition, and the existence of water damage can be detected by noting the temperature difference created by the presence of moisture. When investigating water damage, thermal imaging pinpoints the source of water quickly.

Racing the clock

Once the source of the water has been caught, remediation can begin. Timing is crucial, seeing as mold can grow in areas that have moisture in as little as 24 hours. Damage from water becomes more severe the longer it is present, and items become less salvageable the longer they are exposed to water. With state-of-the-art drying equipment and dehumidification, homes or office buildings exposed to water can be restored to their pre-loss condition. Without the benefits of this equipment or the expertise of restoration specialists, damage from water can become detrimental and very costly.
